Girls Basketball Tryout Information 2015

WOLF LOGO.jpgGirls Basketball Tryout Information

You need:

  • to have a current physical on file. You can't participate in tryouts without these. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
  • to wear good basketball shoes, basketball shorts, tshirt, to have trimmed nails, and to bring water.
  • to tell Coach Grandberry if your fall sport overlaps with tryouts so we can grant you a late tryout. (tyrone.grandberry@jpthegreat.org)

Tryouts are

  • Monday, November 9th in the MAIN GYM from 3:15 to 5:00. Tryouts will last two or three days. Be on time!

In tryouts, coaches look for

  • both objective and subjective measures. Our goal is to pick the best combination of players, who, in the coaches' opinions, can make a contribution in games and/or practices to the overall benefit of the team. ALL coaches have input in team selections at all levels.
  • The key attributes coaches look for include work ethic, coachability, athleticism, agility, and fundamental basketball skills.

Commonly Asked Questions

Do teams play during Thanksgiving and winter break?

The varsity team plays both during Thanksgiving and winter break. The JV team willl have practice during Thanksgiving break and during the last week of December. It is up to each individual coach to hold a practice at other times during each break. Players are expected to be present during these times.

How many players are kept at each level?

The varsity level will keep anywhere from 10 - 14 players. Players who do not get much playing time on the varsity level may be able to compete in a few "JV" games throughout the season.

The JV level (formerly the Freshman sophomore and some juniors level) usually will keep 10 to 14 players.

Is playing time divided equally per player?

  • No! The top varsity players will receive substantially more playing time. Those who don't get much (or any) playing time may play some  JV games.
  • The top JV team players will receive more playing time.

Can freshman or sophomore players "move up" and play at a higher level?

Yes, but this does not happen often. For a player to play above her level, the coaches must conclude that she would probably start at the higher level, be one of the first players off the bench at her position, or benefit most from practicing and developing with that team. Our program philosophy is to keep players at their respective levels in most cases to give players the most playing time possible.

Could a player ever switch to a different level during the season?

Yes, if, in the coaches' opinions, that need arises.

Can a player be involved in another sport (like club volleyball or indoor soccer) during the basketball season?

This is NOT ENCOURAGED! Players risk injury and fatigue that will adversely affect their ability to put forth their best effort in basketball. This also may affect team cohesiveness since team members may question a player's dedication to basketball in general and the team in particular. Basketball (in-season) at JP must take priority over any other sport.

Is there anything else I need to know?

  • Basketball gives a lot, but it demands a lot as well. Be prepared to work hard, commit to a team concept, and give your best toward achieving team goals.
  • We encourage our players to enroll in our weight training program. As a general observation, many of our players are not physically strong enough. Weight training addresses this issue head on!

Good luck at tryouts! See you November 9th.
